What does a pilot do?
A pilot operates an aircraft and conducts the flight safely. Airline pilots carry passengers or cargo; others fly helicopters, business aircraft, air ambulances, surveys or training flights. In an airline cockpit, the captain and first officer plan route and fuel, assess weather and aircraft condition, communicate with air traffic control, and share flying and monitoring. Their job is to preserve safe options as conditions change, including delaying, going around or diverting.
Modern aircraft hold route, speed and altitude precisely, but automation cannot decide whether the plan remains sensible. A pilot must understand the systems, notice when aircraft or weather diverge from expectations, and keep the crew working from the same picture. Long routine stretches sit beside brief, dense workloads. The work combines disciplined procedure with judgement that cannot be postponed.
A degree is not required. Routes include integrated or modular training, airline-linked cadet programmes and military flying with civil credits. UK airline entrants typically need a Commercial Pilot Licence with instrument rating, Airline Transport Pilot Licence theory passes, multi-crew training and an aircraft type rating. Obtain the required Class 1 medical before committing money. The full ATPL follows later after specified experience, including 1,500 flight hours.

Pilot salary in the UK
None of this is net of training. Reaching the right-hand seat costs £80,000 to £130,000, paid before the first day of the first job and usually borrowed, and the debt runs alongside the whole left-hand side of this chart. The lower line is regional, cargo and business aviation, where a first job may pay under £30,000; the upper line is a jet job at a major airline from the start. The jump near the end is command: becoming a captain adds £50,000 or more in a single step, and when it arrives depends on the airline and on the hiring cycle.

The good and the bad of being a pilot
The good
A difficult flight can finish quietly
Low cloud, a late runway change and stronger-than-forecast winds turn an ordinary arrival into a chain of small decisions. You revise the approach, protect enough fuel for another attempt and make a go-around if the aircraft is not stable at the required point. The satisfying result is often deliberately undramatic: passengers leave unaware of how many options were tested because the crew never let inconvenience become urgency.
Teamwork has a precise cockpit grammar
Airline crews use standard call-outs, read-and-response checklists and explicit cross-checks so that two people do more than sit beside each other. A first officer is expected to challenge a captain’s mistake; a captain must create enough openness for that challenge to arrive early. Competence is tested against awkward reality
Recurrent simulator sessions place crews into combinations of failures, poor weather and operational pressure that would be unsafe to practise in the aircraft. The exercise may expose a rushed checklist or an assumption that survived only because normal flights were forgiving. Pilots who enjoy exact feedback can keep refining how they brief, monitor and intervene throughout a career rather than treating qualification as the end of learning.
The bad
You may buy the training before there is a job
Commercial flight training can require a very large personal investment, and advertised package prices do not always include extra flying, accommodation, equipment, tests or an aircraft type rating. Recruitment expands and contracts with the airline market; a licence does not guarantee a cockpit seat. Modular training can spread cost and risk, but it also demands careful planning so that qualifications remain current and the final package matches employers’ requirements.
The roster moves your sleep around
A week may contain a 04:30 report, standby with no certainty of being called, a late finish and work across weekends or bank holidays. Long-haul pilots add time-zone changes and nights away; short-haul crews may fly several sectors in one duty and repeat the security, turnaround and weather cycle each time. Flight-time limitations control duty and rest, yet a legal roster can still be physiologically hard, especially when commuting consumes part of the recovery period.
Permission to fly must keep being renewed
Pilots undergo recurrent simulator checks, line checks, medical examinations and renewals of ratings. A temporary illness, medication change or failed assessment may remove you from flying while it is investigated; some conditions can end a commercial career even when you feel capable of other work. That dependence can make health problems unusually frightening, and it gives honest self-reporting an immediate personal cost despite being essential to safety.
Pilot career path
Trainee Pilot / Cadet
Usually 0–2 years’ experience
You’ll study subjects from meteorology and air law to aircraft performance, build flight time, pass practical tests and learn instrument flying without external visual reference. An airline-linked course may lead directly into selection and type training, while an independent graduate must apply in the open market. Making safe decisions consistently matters more than producing one brilliant test flight.
First Officer
Usually 2–5 years’ experience
After training on a particular aircraft type and completing supervised line flying, you’ll alternate between flying the aircraft and monitoring the other pilot. You’ll learn the operator’s routes, airports and procedures, contribute to fuel and diversion decisions and speak up when a plan no longer fits. The captain holds command, but you remain individually responsible for your actions.
Senior First Officer
Usually 5–9 years’ experience
You’ll handle a wider range of weather, airfields and operational disruptions, support newer colleagues and prepare for command assessment. Once the required experience and tests are complete, you may gain a full ATPL; it permits command but does not create an automatic promotion. Strong senior first officers can anticipate where workload will gather and intervene before the flight deck becomes saturated.
Captain
Usually 9–15 years’ experience
As aircraft commander, you make the final call on whether the aircraft departs, continues, diverts or lands and carry responsibility for the whole operation. Technical knowledge remains important, but command adds crew performance, passenger welfare and pressure from schedules or cost. You must invite disagreement and turn uncertainty into a plan the whole crew can execute before discussion consumes the time available to act.
Training Captain / Fleet Captain / Chief Pilot
Usually 15+ years’ experience
A training or examining captain can remain an active line pilot while developing and assessing others in aircraft and simulators. Fleet captains and chief pilots take a management route, setting operational standards, responding to safety trends and balancing staffing with reliable schedules. Senior influence may therefore come through expert instruction and checking or through accountability for how an entire operation flies.
What degree do you need to be a pilot?
Provide useful grounding in flight operations, safety, meteorology and the economics of airlines; some courses include professional flight training. The degree title does not confer a pilot licence, so applicants must verify which CAA-approved training, flying hours and ratings are actually included and how the extra fees are funded.
Develops confidence with systems, forces, energy and structured fault-finding. That knowledge helps when learning aircraft performance and technical limitations, but a pilot must resist diagnosing beyond the approved procedure and add practical flying, radio communication and multi-crew habits.
Build quantitative reasoning for navigation, weather and performance calculations. The cockpit rarely asks for elegant derivations: graduates must learn to extract the operational consequence quickly, cross-check electronic outputs and communicate a usable decision while workload continues.
Offer insight into how airlines make money from aircraft utilisation, networks and punctuality. Commercial awareness becomes harmful if it weakens a safety margin, so entrants must learn where operational efficiency ends and command authority begins alongside the full technical training.
Can sharpen understanding of weather, place, culture and precise communication across borders. Graduates need to add mathematics, aircraft systems and practical procedures, while turning broad verbal confidence into the concise, standard phraseology used on the radio and flight deck.
Pilots enter from many other subjects, military service, another career or without a degree. Previous experience may bring maturity and calm, but employers judge licences, medical fitness, aptitude, training record and crew behaviour rather than accepting general enthusiasm as evidence. Whatever the route, applicants should test their fit through informed research before taking on major training costs.

A day in the life of a pilot
05:45 – 06:20Turn forecasts into limits
You meet the captain for a return flight from London to Lisbon. The forecast shows gusty winds in Portugal and deteriorating visibility back at base. Operational notices, called NOTAMs, report taxiway work and an approach aid unavailable at the alternate airport. You compare runway limits, likely routing and fuel choices; carrying extra fuel costs fuel, but today it protects against holding and a second approach.
The cabin manager joins the briefing. You cover expected turbulence, the longer taxi route and when cabin service may need to stop. The captain will fly south and you will monitor; those roles will reverse on the return. A passenger needing boarding assistance is running late, so ground staff agree the latest time the doors can close without losing the departure slot.
In the cockpit, you review the technical log, enter and independently cross-check the route and calculate take-off performance for the damp runway. Outside, you inspect tyres, control surfaces, sensors and signs of leakage or damage. The final load sheet arrives with a revised baggage figure, and both pilots verify that the new mass still matches the performance calculation before the aircraft moves.
During taxi, you read the checklist and catch a frequency entered in the wrong radio. Once airborne, the autopilot follows the programmed route while you track clearances, fuel, weather and what the automation will do next. Air traffic control offers a shorter path towards Lisbon; the crew accepts only after confirming it still leaves enough distance to descend without rushing the approach.
With passengers leaving and cleaners boarding, you obtain the return weather and inspect the aircraft again. Visibility at London is falling faster than forecast and one runway has closed temporarily for an inspection. The captain requests a fuel top-up rather than relying on the original turnaround figure. It causes a small delay, but preserves a credible alternate if the closure continues.
Crew sandwich.
You are pilot flying for the return. After take-off, the captain monitors your inputs and handles radio calls while you guide the aircraft around a line of cloud. Weather radar shows precipitation, not a guaranteed safe path, so visual cues, reports from other aircraft and generous separation still matter. Cabin crew are warned before turbulence reaches the cabin rather than after the seat-belt sign proves necessary.
The London runway remains closed and controllers expect holding. You and the captain recalculate fuel at each expected landing time, name the quantity that will trigger diversion and brief the alternate before it is needed. Operations would prefer the aircraft back at base for its afternoon schedule, but that preference does not alter the threshold. Fuel becomes useful judgement only when the crew decides in advance what each margin is for.
The runway reopens and you begin the approach, but a late tailwind leaves the aircraft too high and fast at the stabilisation gate. You call the go-around, apply power and follow the published missed-approach route while the captain informs controllers and cabin crew. The second approach is stable and you land with the planned reserve intact. At the stand, the captain tells the waiting operations team why the extra circuit was necessary; the next flight starts late, with the aircraft and its options undamaged.
