What does an architect do?
An architect plans how buildings and surrounding spaces should work, feel and endure. They turn a client’s needs into a design, guide it through planning and technical approval, and coordinate the people who make it buildable. From a house extension to a hospital, the core is making connected decisions about space, materials, safety, cost and use while keeping one building coherent.
A design does not pass cleanly from sketch to building. Move a doorway and the escape route, structure, wiring, cost and planning appearance may all shift. Architects spend much of their time following an idea into its technical consequences, then reconciling specialists who each own part of the answer. The work combines visual thought with detail, negotiation and constraints.
In the UK, “architect” is protected: you must join the Architects Registration Board (ARB) to use it. The established route combines accredited undergraduate and postgraduate study, at least two years’ practical experience and a professional practice qualification; degree apprenticeships and some alternative routes also exist. As ARB is revising its framework, check current requirements. Employers value a portfolio showing how you developed and resolved a design, not only polished images.

The good and the bad of being an architect
The good
A sketch can become somewhere people inhabit
The section you adjust on screen may eventually determine whether morning light reaches a classroom, whether a wheelchair user can enter by the same route as everyone else or whether a family naturally gathers in one room. Construction is slow, but it gives architectural decisions unusual physical presence. You can return years later and walk through a problem that once existed only in your sketchbook.
Every site argues back
A narrow plot, a listed wall, a view that neighbours value or an unexpected change in level prevents the brief from becoming a standard answer. Good architects use these conditions as material: the awkward boundary creates a courtyard, the retained structure gives a new building its rhythm. Finding a form that seems inevitable is satisfying precisely because you remember all the rejected versions.
The craft moves from city to screw head
On the same project, you may consider how a building meets the street, how people find a quiet room and how rainwater leaves a window sill. Few jobs ask you to move so often between civic experience, human proportions and construction detail. As your knowledge grows, a façade stops being a picture and becomes weather protection, structure, daylight, maintenance and appearance working together.
The bad
The title arrives after a long apprenticeship
The usual route includes years of study, practice and professional assessment, and the financial burden can be considerable. Early roles may involve correcting drawings, schedules and models while senior architects retain the most visible design decisions. The distance between architecture school and professional autonomy can feel longer than expected, even when the work is useful training.
Mistakes become expensive physical facts
A missed dimension can mean steel arriving in the wrong place; an unresolved fire or waterproofing detail can put people and the whole practice at risk. Buildings cannot be patched as cheaply as a document, and responsibility continues after a drawing is issued. Checking, coordinating and keeping an accurate decision trail are not administrative extras: they are how architects prevent a clever concept from becoming an unsafe or unbuildable building.
Years of work may never reach the ground
Planning refusal, rising construction prices, lost funding or a client’s change of direction can stop a project after hundreds of drawings and meetings. Even schemes that proceed may be paused and redesigned repeatedly as the budget moves. A substantial part of your portfolio may remain paper architecture, however deeply you have invested in the place.
Architect career path
Part 1 Architectural Assistant
Usually 0–2 years’ experience
You’ll support defined pieces of a live project while learning how professional drawings, models and records differ from university work. Typical tasks include surveying an existing building, updating plans, testing layouts and preparing planning information. Close checking matters because other disciplines may act on what you draw, even before you are qualified to use the title architect.
Part 2 Architectural Assistant / Newly Qualified Architect
Usually 2–5 years’ experience
You’ll take ownership of larger packages and begin coordinating engineers, consultants and approvals. After completing the required experience and professional practice qualification, you can apply to the ARB Register. Resolving one option across cost, regulation and construction gradually replaces the freedom to propose many attractive options.
Project Architect
Usually 5–8 years’ experience
You may run a small project or lead a major part of a larger one from brief to site. You’ll manage information, chair coordination meetings, advise the client and make decisions when consultants’ requirements conflict. Your value lies in maintaining the design intent while knowing which detail, risk or unanswered question could obstruct the whole job.
Senior Architect / Associate
Usually 8–12 years’ experience
You’ll oversee several projects, review other people’s work and help manage client relationships, fees and staffing. Some senior architects deepen as technical, conservation, sustainability or sector specialists rather than becoming line managers. Influence increasingly comes through setting direction and catching risk early, not drawing every solution yourself.
Director / Partner / Principal Architect
Usually 12+ years’ experience
At the senior end, you may lead a practice, win work and accept responsibility for its design quality, finances and professional standards. A design principal can remain closely involved in the architectural language of major schemes; a managing partner spends more time on people, clients and commercial survival. The job becomes creating the conditions in which ambitious buildings can be promised responsibly and delivered well.
What degree do you need to be an architect?
Provides the most direct foundation in design studio, representation, architectural history and building technology, and an accredited course may satisfy the first stage of professional education. Students still need to learn how fees, contracts, regulations and construction decisions shape real practice.
Develops an understanding of sites as parts of streets, communities and planning systems, which is especially useful on housing and regeneration work. Graduates may need an accredited architecture qualification or equivalence route, alongside a portfolio showing sustained spatial design.
Brings confidence with structure, materials, building physics and measurable environmental performance. Architectural study must add cultural context and lived experience to technical analysis, so that the building is not treated as an efficient object alone.
Builds visual judgement, experimentation and the ability to develop an idea through drawings and models. Moving into architecture normally requires further accredited study, while construction technology, regulation and designing for other people’s constraints must be learnt deliberately.
History, geography and related subjects help graduates read places, institutions and competing accounts of what a neighbourhood needs. They usually need to add visual communication, technical knowledge and a substantial architecture portfolio before entering a professional route.
People arrive from subjects including science, property and unrelated fields through foundation study, apprenticeship or a recognised postgraduate route. An unconventional background can sharpen a specialism, but registration still depends on meeting ARB’s current academic and practice outcomes, not enthusiasm alone.

A day in the life of an architect

You review yesterday’s site photographs and the decisions still open on a Victorian library conversion. Today’s issue is the accessible entrance: it must cross a change in level without crowding the original stone doorway or reducing the public foyer.
The structural engineer and building-services engineer join a call around the shared three-dimensional building model. A proposed beam occupies the same space as a ventilation duct above the entrance. You test which element can move and ask each consultant to confirm the consequences rather than hiding the clash inside a ceiling.
You redraw the entrance through a vertical slice of the building. Lowering part of the floor makes the route gentler, but exposes an old foundation and changes the drainage. Three quick options reveal that shifting the inner doors preserves the daylight and removes one costly structural intervention.
The client and quantity surveyor, the project’s cost consultant, review the options. The preferred stone ramp is over budget. You explain which dimensions protect accessibility and which materials could change, then agree to price a carefully detailed brick alternative rather than quietly making the route narrower.

You develop the chosen option into plans, sections and junction details. Door clearances, handrails, drainage falls, insulation and the line of the existing masonry all have to agree. A visualisation tool can show the atmosphere quickly; it cannot confirm that water will run away from the threshold or that the handrail can be fixed safely.
The contractor has opened the floor and found an unrecorded drain exactly where the new landing was meant to sit. You photograph and measure it, check that the area is safe, and resist offering an instant solution. Moving the drain, the landing or the entrance each affects a different approval and consultant.
Back at the practice, you bring the civil engineer, access consultant and contractor into a short review. The drain can remain if the landing shifts by 180 millimetres and one door is rehung. A local fix is only successful if it does not create a new barrier elsewhere, so you check the full route again.
The library manager and access consultant test the revision against the journeys of a wheelchair user, a parent with a buggy and somebody unfamiliar with the building. Rehanging the door solves the drain clash but leaves two people likely to meet at its narrowest point. You shift a display case and adjust the waiting space before the concrete fixes the geometry. A compliant route still has to work as a place.
