What does an academic do?
An academic develops knowledge in a specialist field and teaches other people how that knowledge is uncovered, tested and challenged. University work may combine original research, lectures, student supervision, peer review and course design. Laboratories, archives, studios and field sites produce very different working days, but an academic’s claims must ultimately be open to examination by other specialists.
Posts may be research-only, teaching-focused or combine both, with the balance changing between institutions and terms. You might explain an established idea to first-year students in the morning, then confront evidence that unsettles your own account of it. The work rewards patient attention to a narrow problem and the ability to communicate its significance without pretending the uncertainty has vanished.
Most entrants complete a first degree, sometimes a master’s, and a doctorate that builds research and teaching experience. Postdoctoral posts, teaching fellowships and fixed-term lectureships commonly follow. Practice-based fields may accept substantial professional achievement instead of a doctorate. With no single licence to practise as an academic, universities judge research potential, teaching and collegial contribution; a teaching certificate or Advance HE Fellowship is often completed after appointment.

Academic salary in the UK
The first four years are a doctorate, paid as a studentship rather than a salary. The stipend is free of tax and National Insurance, so it is worth roughly a fifth more than the figure shown. What follows is postdoctoral research on fixed-term contracts, usually two or three years at a time, before a first permanent lectureship arrives somewhere near the end of this decade. The lower line is the hourly-paid and fractional teaching that a quarter of the occupation does. The chart follows those who stay in academia, which is far fewer people than start a doctorate.

The good and the bad of being an academic
The good
A difficult question can hold your attention for years
Academic work allows unusual depth. An odd result in an experiment, an overlooked archive or a contradiction in a theory can become a sustained programme of inquiry rather than a loose end to clear. The pleasure is not simply knowing more; it is reaching the point where you can see why the obvious explanation fails and devise a fairer test.
Students reveal where understanding is brittle
Teaching forces you to rebuild familiar ideas for people who do not yet share your assumptions. A student’s apparently simple question can expose a missing step in an argument, while a well-designed seminar lets a group discover why two reasonable interpretations diverge. Watching somebody acquire intellectual independence is a reward unlike publishing, and it can also sharpen the teacher’s own research.
Scholarship crosses generations and borders
A paper may answer a researcher who died decades ago, be challenged by a colleague overseas and give a future doctoral student the method they need. Conferences, peer review and collaborative projects create a conversation larger than one employer. Recognition is slow and uneven, but contributing something that other people can test, teach or build upon gives the work a long horizon.
The bad
Early careers are unstable, moving from one grant to the next
Many researchers move through fixed-term posts tied to a project, sometimes relocating repeatedly while trying to publish and apply for the permanent job that will let them settle. A contract can end just as expertise and collaborations become productive. The uncertainty affects housing, relationships and whether it is sensible to begin a research question whose answer will outlast the funding.
Several incompatible calendars govern the same week
Students need feedback during the same term in which a conference paper is due; a funding call closes while exams require moderation; fieldwork depends on a season that the timetable ignores. Research needs uninterrupted thought, but teaching and administration arrive at fixed times. Because each obligation is real and largely unavoidable, evenings can become the only space left for the writing on which a research career is judged.
Quality is filtered through imperfect signals
Hiring and promotion panels cannot reread a life’s work from first principles, so journal reputation, grant income, citation counts and student evaluations may stand in for judgement. These measures capture something, but they also favour certain topics, methods, institutions and personalities. Rejection is routine, peer review can be slow or contradictory, and valuable work may spend years without an obvious institutional reward.
Academic career path
Postdoctoral Researcher / Teaching Fellow
Usually 0–3 years’ experience
You’ll work on a defined research project or carry a substantial teaching load while turning doctoral work into publications. Contracts are often fixed-term. The central task is to establish an intellectual contribution recognisably your own, even when the grant, laboratory or module was designed by somebody more senior.
Lecturer / Assistant Professor
Usually 3–7 years’ experience
You’ll usually design and teach modules, supervise dissertations, publish independent research and begin applying for funding. You may also act as a personal tutor and take a departmental role. Academic independence comes with conflicting demands: publishing may be essential for promotion, yet you must often fit the writing around your teaching timetable.
Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor
Usually 7–12 years’ experience
You’ll lead larger research or curriculum projects, supervise doctoral candidates and mentor early-career colleagues. Some academics deepen into education-focused or research-focused promotion routes. Promotion increasingly depends on the reach of a curriculum, research group or doctoral programme, not merely on adding to your own list of outputs.
Reader / Professor
Usually 12–18 years’ experience
A reader or professor may become a leading authority, direct a research group, win major grants or shape teaching across a discipline. Titles vary between universities, and professor is a level of appointment rather than simply a form of address in the UK. Senior individual contributors can exert wide influence through ideas, supervision and disciplinary service without running a department.
Head of Department / Dean / Senior Professor
Usually 18+ years’ experience
Leadership routes bring responsibility for people, budgets, appointments, workload and the direction of a department or faculty. A senior professor may instead concentrate on an exceptional research, clinical or educational programme. The hardest decisions concern the institution around scholarship: which fields to support, how to protect academic standards and whose development receives scarce time or money.

You are studying how neighbourhoods cope with extreme heat. Overnight, a research assistant has found that several street sensors stopped recording on the hottest afternoons. Filling the gaps with an average would make the places of greatest interest look milder, so you postpone the planned analysis. Today’s class is about missing data. After removing identifying details and unpublished findings, you turn the problem into a classroom exercise: should the incomplete observations be excluded, the missing values estimated or the research question narrowed? You show how each choice changes the conclusions the evidence can support.
Small groups defend their choices. One student asks whether sensors were more likely to fail in direct sunlight, while another notices that every site was chosen near a resident volunteer’s home. Their questions do not solve your study, but they distinguish equipment failure from a deeper sampling problem and give the class a genuine argument to test.
A final-year student brings a dissertation chapter that contains twenty sources but no clear claim. You take one paragraph apart together, separating what the evidence shows from what the writer infers. When the student mentions a health problem affecting deadlines, you explain the formal support route rather than making an improvised promise you cannot apply fairly to everyone.
Campus café.
A doctoral candidate wants to add another city to a study already rich in interviews. You ask what comparison would become possible and what the extra fieldwork would displace. The conversation ends with a smaller addition - a contrasting neighbourhood within the same city - and a clearer account of why it tests the candidate’s explanation.
You compare sensor outages with handwritten observation logs and official weather-station records. The stations cannot reconstruct street-level temperatures, but they confirm that failures clustered during peak heat. Rather than manufacture complete data, you redesign the paper around the reliability limits of low-cost monitoring and contact the affected community partners before changing the project’s public claims.
An editor has sent you an anonymous manuscript to review. Its central result is interesting, but the authors describe renters as choosing not to adapt their homes without considering whether landlords refused alterations. Because peer review should improve an argument rather than display the reviewer’s status, you recommend revision and specify the evidence needed. This is unpaid disciplinary labour, but the system depends on academics doing it carefully.
Colleagues compare marks from different seminar groups and inspect a sample of scripts at the grade boundaries. One assessment question disadvantaged students who interpreted an ambiguous instruction literally. You agree a consistent adjustment for the current cohort and a redesigned question next year; fairness depends on examining the assessment as well as the student.
You return to the failed sensors expecting only to catalogue the damage. A plot shows that cheap devices from three separate manufacturers fail at sharply different heat thresholds. The intended neighbourhood comparison cannot proceed, but the failure itself may explain why several published city maps understate extremes. At 18:00 the original paper is in pieces and a more fundamental research question has arrived.
